Introduction to Law Enforcement
Throughout the Introduction to Law Enforcement class, sophomores will be introduced to many areas of law enforcement. By the end of the course, they will have a better understanding of the situations that the law enforcement officers may encounter on a police shift.
Law Enforcement History–Just how did crime prevention evolve into a modern police force?
Ethics–Society’s rules (laws) tell what we should not do, but there are also gray areas. What is the right thing to do in an ethical dilemma?
Police Patrol Operations–Just what do officers do before beginning a shift, how do police go about their day, and what is this "Cop Lingo"?
Handcuffing–Placing handcuffs on a person requires the officer to decide the correct way to tactically, legally and medically restrain a person.
Baton–Anyone can swing a baseball bat. But can you articulate to the court why you were justified in striking a person with a baton with the amount of force you used?
Federal vs. State vs. Local Laws–What criminal offense can a local or state officer make an arrest that a federal officer cannot? Where does your jurisdiction begin and end?
Use of Force–What type of force should a police officer use? When should force be used? How does he/she report force?
Defensive Tactics–To protect the public or him/herself, the police officer will have to know how.
Radio Procedure–Step one in the process of performing a vehicle stop.
Disease Transmission and Safety Issues–An officer’s personal protective equipment and how to prevent death when in contact with the public and hazardous situations
