Welcome to Construction Technology
Hello, my name is John Cothran. I am a 1984 graduate of Furman University with a degree in Computer Science/Business. I also have a master's degree from Converse College in Elementary Education.
After graduating from Furman I decided to join the Army. After completing Basic Training and Officer Candidates School I went to flight school and became an Army helicopter pilot. I flew the AH-1 Gunship and the OH-58 Kiowa Scout helicopter. When my obligation to the Army was up I went to work with the Greenville Hospital System as a Computer Training Specialist where I trained users on hospital specific computer software. It was during this time that I decided that I wanted to teach and I quit that job to get my teaching degree. After completing my master's program I taught 5th grade for a year before accepting a job at Piedmont Technical College as an instructor in the Computer Science Department.
While at Piedmont Tech. I taught classes in computer applications and computer programming. I designed and started the Computer Repair and Networking certificate program at Piedmont Tech and taught classes for this certificate for approximately five years. I left Piedmont Tech to become the Computer Services instructor for the Career and Technology Center where I have been teaching ever since.
Woodworking and construction has always been a passion for me. I did a lot of home construction growing up and have continued learning in this field as a hobby for the last 30 years. I have a nice 2-story barn at home that I built and I have spent a lot of time in it building various wooden projects. I am married with 3 children and we spend a lot of time together kayaking, fishing, hunting, and tending to our small farm with goats, pot belly pigs, and chickens.
