Seniors in Mrs. Lancaster’s Television Broadcasting program at Anderson Districts I & II Career and Technology Center visited United Ministries’ Our Eyes Were Opened in Greenville, SC. This non-profit organization created in 2007 educates individuals and groups in making wise and compassionate decisions for helping people in poverty. Students were given a 2 hour tour by the Program Associate, RJ March, to blighted areas within the community in order to educate and sensitize them to the realities of people who live with limited choices. The TV Broadcasting students were given the opportunity to film during parts of the tour, interview employees of the organization, and interview one participant. This participant was very open and honest with students about the effects of poverty. He encouraged students to stay in school and stay focused on their goals. Students are working on a feature story based on what they learned about poverty in their community. The Television Broadcasting course at the Career Center is designed to instruct students in the fields of video production and broadcast journalism.
